Chamber Chat – Brendan Hughes

As I get out and about in the district I am enthused by the amount of investment brought into the area by various bodies including the BIDS, LCC and more importantly businesses. At the bedrock of the districts wealth are ventures large and small, no matter the size, these businesses keep our residents employed, provide services and products for the district and beyond and contribute to the pot via business rates.

With the signalled withdrawal of the revenue support grant by central govt, now is the time council and business need to work hand in hand to secure the districts future. This is no new concept and I have attended many successful chamber meetings with the council’s cabinet. This is a fantastic starting point for Chamber members to ensure their issues are brought to the attention of the council at the highest level, just one of the many benefits of joining the chamber of commerce.

The completion of The Bay gateway is bringing exciting investment opportunities for the whole district with jobs and services and it won’t be long before we see work starting on various plots of land adjacent to the gateway. This is investment of millions of pounds that just wasn’t imaginable 10 years ago.

Morecambe's sea wall and new parks on the promenade have been a welcome addition to the scenery. The Morecambe town centre upgrade works should be completed anytime soon, this has transformed the look of the town centre, hopefully this will encourage town centre shops to spruce up their little bit.

I hear all the time that all the investment is going to Lancaster, this is certainly not the case from where I am sat. I think the district as a whole is benefitting from investment and all the areas have their own bit to add to the story, whether it be Morecambe, Lancaster, the town of Carnforth and everything in between.

If you have a business and are thinking about growth or investment, there is plenty of advice out there via The Chamber or Lancaster City Council's regeneration team. Be part of the story of the future of our district.
