Chamber Chat – Mental Health Awareness week with Jon Powell
Did you know the 16th to the 22nd May was mental health awareness week? This may have passed you by. However mental health and wellbeing has been at the forefront of my mind these past few years. I’ve seen family, friends and colleagues all suffer from mental health challenges and so I have been trying to find out more about preventative measures and how I can better support the people around me. You might think you don’t have a problem with your mental health so this isn’t important to you, but what about your staff, your colleagues, your friends and family, your children. One in six adults suffers from a common mental disorder with women suffering more than men. Each year individuals with mental health challenges spend over 8.5million potential working days in hospital with the average spell in an NHS hospital being 33 days. Absence from work due to mental health will cost your organisation time and money.
So if you have over 6 employees chances are mental health and wellbeing will be a factor in a least one member of your staff! So what can you do about it?
- Take care of yourself!
- Try and create an open and supportive culture in your organisation.
- Promote wellbeing, try and develop resilient staff and tackle the cause of work-related mental health problems.
- Have a look for some free guidelines online, www.mind.org.uk/workplace/mental-health-at-work/ is a good place to start.
If you would like the Chamber of Commerce to run an event or course on this then please let us know!
