Founder & Chairman – SilverDoor

Lancaster must focus on developing a thriving commercial centre in the city.

In 2016 I acquired a Lancaster-based company and merged it into my international group. I then embarked on an unexpectedly long and difficult four-year challenge to find my team a decent Grade A office space. At that time my team numbered around forty people, and a suitable new facility for them simply didn’t exist within the city centre. So, I either had to build my own, or relocate the whole of my Northern office to Liverpool or Manchester. I chose to stay Lancaster.

In 2020, I purchased and subsequently invested over £3M into redeveloping Charter House on Dalton Square. We moved in at the start of 2022 and it has been a much admired and positively received addition to the commercial landscape in the city. If it wasn’t for that investment, I am certain that we wouldn’t have been able to retain our fabulous SilverDoor team here in Lancaster, nor attract the very best professionals from the rich pool of talent we have in the area. As a result, our talented team now consists of over seventy employees and continues to grow.

In just over two years we have successfully recruited and significantly grown our city-centre professional work force by providing permanent, full-time careers in a fabulous Grade A office space in the heart of Lancaster. The demand for quality offices is clear, with several local businesses using my office space for their own events. We are pleased to be able to support them.

The challenges my company faced in sourcing quality office space in the city illustrates the challenges facing all companies. Lancaster remains a city with great people and huge potential. It has much to offer but it must continue to invest in quality and accessible city-centre office space, with good transport access and, crucially, plenty of affordable parking. Otherwise we run the risk of losing talented individuals and businesses to Liverpool or Manchester.
