Chamber Chat- Richard Bradfield, station director Heysham 1 power station

AFTER catching up with the station teams who attended and enjoyed the recent EXPO organised by the Chamber, it reminded me what a diverse and interesting business sector we have in this area which can only be good for employment opportunities going forward.

As two well established businesses the two power stations, which are celebrating their 35th and 30th anniversaries this year, we have always looked to local companies to work with us to support our activities.

At Heysham 1 we will be holding our celebration evenings at the Winter Gardens which should hopefully provide some well-deserved finances to the theatre which will help its dedicated volunteer team bring back one of the resort’s great buildings.

But each and every day, across both sites, we work with local firms who bring their specialist knowledge to ensure the sites will also be celebrating more milestones in the future.

In all we work closely with around 40 local firms, some of which have managed to develop and diversify their businesses into other industries after working with the stations.

One such business is Lancastle at Halton. They solved a headache for us some 10 years ago by offering handmade covers for our open pipes which are often strange shapes and sizes. The covers stop unwanted items falling in.

The quality of these bespoke covers and the flexibility of the company in meeting our needs, means they have been able to offer this product to other UK-based power stations and have now ventured into Europe.

So we have managed to play a part in the success and future of one Lancaster company and we wish them well for the future.

And judging by the buzz at the 2018 EXPO I am sure many more such links were built by businesses large and small.
