Chamber Chat - Brendan Hughes
I am writing for the final time as the city councils representative on the Chamber of Commerce board. The protest votes were cast and we stand in a new political frontier for the district, with no overall control of the council and the rise of the smaller, previously unknown parties.
In my time as a labour councillor for the district I was privileged to be a cabinet member for the environment, I worked with talented officers, who I have no doubt will continue to try to do their best for the district. I saw 3 chief execs come and go and had many a heated discussion with members from all sides of the chamber and officers alike.
I`m proud to say despite some blockers the team I was involved with made some real positive changes to the district, I hope this continues with the new guard.
We have so much to look forward to in the area, with the Eden land deal due to come to council in June and the ongoing work with canal quarter that continues in earnest.
It is now commonplace to see and hear about investment into the district, whether that be through our universities or private enterprise, this was a rare occurrence even 4 years ago.
We have two BIDS in the district that add value to the area and push the standard up across the whole district.
The summer event season starts shortly in the area with some fantastic local events, the weather promises to be nice so venture out and see whats on offer.
With the new place board works that have come into fruition we have the tools to shout about our area and encourage others to jump on the bandwagon.
In short the district is a great place to live, work and play so lets shout about it.
