Chamber Chat – Chris Gardner

One of the purposes of the Chamber of Commerce is, as the name suggests, to get people involved in commerce into the same room. This the Chamber does regularly via a thriving and extensive programme of events.

A good example was the recent quarterly lunch, which in summer also includes the AGM. The event was well attended and indeed the venue, Forrest Hills, sold out. We were aided by the weather which was so good that the AGM part of the meeting was held outside and I wonder if this is a first in the Chamber’s 120 year history! The event was attended by a wide range of different businesses and organisations and all of them had the opportunity to network and show off their wares.

The weather aside, this was not an unusual event. The Chamber holds regular evening members’ meets and business lunches as well as other events such as an annual dinner and a wide range of training events. The biggest event of the year is the upcoming Expo which will see over a hundred exhibitors and hopefully thousands of visitors.

Many people who go to these events are pleasantly surprised. Not just by the variety of people who are there to speak to, but by how friendly the events are. Virtually everyone who attends is supportive and genuinely interested in meeting new contacts. The Chamber team is always on hand to help and I have heard more than one person say this year that the event was not at all scary like they thought it would be.

If you are a member of the Chamber and do not currently attend any events, why not give them a try? If you are in business or part of an organisation that would like to meet businesses and are not a member ask yourself, why not? It is a small investment with a big potential return.

Details of upcoming events can be found here
