Chamber Chat – Cllr Brendan Hughes

What a weekend that was for the district. The hosting of the first Highest Point festival at Williamsons Park was a huge success and very much enjoyed by all involved. Initial estimates are at over 10 thousand visitors to the park over the weekend, many were experiencing the park and Ashton Memorial for the first time, and there are already talks of other events in the popular park.

In my capacity as cabinet member for clean, green and public safety I get to see first-hand how hard our public realm and environmental service teams, work behind the scenes on events like this and other events in the district.

This can be seen as residents and visitors alike experience what we have to offer, you only have to walk down the promenade in Morecambe on a sunny day and experience thousands of visitors taking in the views of our beautiful bay.

It’s great to hear and see that our public realm teams ensure the beach is as clean in the evening as it was in the morning.

Our beaches have the blue flag accreditation, our parks are regular recipients of the highly sought after Green flag awards and Morecambe won a gold medal in the north west in bloom awards.

The splash park in Happy Mount Park recently appeared in the Manchester evening news as a top 10 attraction within an hour of Manchester.

I was honoured to be a part of the team nominating Will Griffiths, public realm manager as a rising star at the prestigious industry awards. I`m happy to say he is a finalist.

It feels like the district is all geared up for a great summer of events and tens of thousands of visitors.

Support your local events if you can and enjoy our beautiful district.

Brendan owns ICU Security Services based in Morecambe and has a keen interest in ensuring Morecambe holds a better future for the next generation. He is the treasurer for Go Morecambe community Interest Company, Homestart Morecambe and Lancaster, Morecambe Heritage, and Morecambe Carnival.
