Portrayal of business start up in social media

The pandemic has resulted in many workers reassessing their priorities and with work being such a big part of one’s life, it is no surprise that people have come to realise that the 9 to 5 office job may not be for them.

The prevalence and acceptance of remote working has resulted in many people taking the plunge to start their own business from within their home without incurring the costs and investment associated with larger work or office spaces. In the UK alone, more than 400,000 start ups were formed in 2020. With all the positive LinkedIn posts, it is easy to forget about the risk and reward relationship that comes with working for yourself. Much like the Instagram posts of celebrities showing only the positive aspects of their glamorous life, the LinkedIn influencers never mention the stress of owning your business and lack of financial security that would usually come with a salaried position. Social media has made it hard to distinguish false content from real information and it is very easy to make it look like your life is perfect online. I must admit that I do it too – I only post about my achievements and positive aspects of my life because sharing my failures & struggles with everyone would make me feel vulnerable – these are reserved for my closest friends but that doesn’t mean they aren’t there.

The truth is that the benefits that people start out on their own for– better work/life balance, flexibility, and money, often don’t come until much later in the business’s life. I have seen first-hand that the first few months or even years see you working harder and longer than ever and come with a fair bit of stress too!

But with great risk comes great reward – provided you have the determination, have done your research and most of all – remain realistic about your expectations. And this doesn’t apply to just starting your own business, everything that’s posted on social media should be taken with a pinch of salt!
