Chamber Chat with Nick Dagger

Antisocial, Social Media

Isn't it wonderful to be out and about again, meeting actual real-life people, face to face!

It's been a long time coming and something we have all felt the impact of in all sorts of different ways. But the excitement amongst the local business community is palpable. We are all ready to get back out there and shout from the rooftops that we are here and open for business!

Getting back to networking has been the kick start the business community really needs, with the return of great events hosted by The Chamber being highlights in the networking calendar. It really is the start of something special, the B of the bang, a whole new world. I could go on. However, I've noticed while attending events recently; people look to be more engaged on their phones, focused on 'checking in' on social media, letting people know where they are and what they are doing rather than being present in the moment.

Don't get me wrong, I'm very guilty of this. As the Head of Marketing at ICS Accounting, I spend a lot of my working life on social media. However, when attending a face-to-face meeting, we must get back to talking, listening and building valuable connections. We need to make a conscious effort to focus on the people in front of us.

Start the event by taking a couple of snaps to use on your feed later, then disconnect from your phones, enjoy the event, make connections in real life and schedule time after the event to shout from the (social media) rooftops what a great event it was (and make those connections legit on LinkedIn of course!) This will give you the best of both worlds, allowing you to avoid the anti-social aspects of social media and get us back used to doing business in the real world.

Nick Dagger is the Head of Marketing at ICS Accounting, who are Chamber Ambassadors.
