Chamber Chat with Vicky Lofthouse

Women business owners and working women face certain challenges and obstacles that most men do not. Working women who have children experience even more demands on time, energy and resources, and women face gender discrimination in business and on the job. But women are not less successful than men, in fact, statistics show that women are starting businesses at more than twice the rate of all other businesses.

Many women struggle with finding better ways to balance work and life and often this guilt comes from outside sources like pressure from husbands, family, and friends. But we shouldn’t feel guilty about having a passion for business and our careers no one should.

Gender lines are drawn early, and exclusions for women continue throughout adulthood. Not only are women discriminated against in private businesses, but also by the government. Gender bias begins in school, but it shouldn’t hold us back and confidence is key.

Women do face many challenges including discrimination and are often paid less than men for doing the same job. But there are some industries where women are competing and even dominate. Knowing where women are succeeding can help you decide areas to grow your business and identify obstacles in male-dominated industries.

Two of the most effective tools in overcoming challenges working women face include networking and finding a mentor. Finding inspiration and support from other businesswomen or men on fire can be life changing and a 100% must in today’s society.

So, throw out those fears, banish those bad habits and improve your effectiveness, showcase your business passion and learn how to love life and stop balancing.

This International Women's Day (March 8) the Chamber is joining 1000’s of organisations across the world to celebrate women’s achievement. We have teamed up with Women in Property to bring you an online morning event where our speakers will ‘challenge the norm’, inspiring us with their enthusiasm, positivity and visions to create landmark environmental and sustainable destinations in the tourist hub of the north.
