Are you stuck in the burnout cycle?

What’s the definition of insanity? Repeating the same thing, over and over, and expecting different results. There’s more than a little truth in this much retold trope.

Running a business is stressful. This much is a given, and – to an extent – to be expected. But did you know that there is a fine line between stress and total burnout?

If your over engagement on social media is tilting towards total disengagement on a wider scale and your proactive responses are tumbling from reactive responses to a blunted sense of helplessness you may be suffering from stress-related burn out. This is the point where anxiety can turn to depression.

It’s a subtle cycle, that quickly spirals and feeds into itself.

Stage 1: Work more – achieve less

When you’re feeling overwhelmed, you start to work harder, longer hours to try to compensate, but instead end up achieving less and feel anxious that you can never catch up.

Stage 2: Exhaustion

This naturally leads to exhaustion, forgetfulness and a sense of being unfocussed.

Stage 3: Absence of joy

Your exhaustion leads to disrupted sleep patterns and you start to lose your sense of enjoyment, both in your work and in family and friends.

Stage 4: Emotional overload

The natural emotional companions to your plight are anxiety, irritability and anger. The solution? Why, simply work harder! And the cycle recommences.

But it doesn’t have to.

What if the answer was so simple it was right in front of you?
