Lancaster- THE City for Events in 2019
Tis the season for events! Which season I hear you ask? Well…. All of them! The Lancaster calendar of events for 2019 looks set to be the best one yet, with so much to see and do for all. This year will see the return of some of Lancaster’s most popular events, including Dino-Day, Lancaster Festa Italia and Light Up Lancaster. This year will also see the much anticipated return of Lancaster Music Festival- one of the most popular annual events in the city, with 75,000 festival goers expected over the 4 days.
If you’re ready, let’s get started on the dates that you need to have in your 2019 diary!
Spring sees Litfest celebrating its 40th birthday with a programme of events on selected dates over 3 weeks in March, from 8th – 31st. This event will do what Litfest does best, which is celebrating literary excellence, only this year, bigger and better than ever!
This Easter, you will be thinking Chocolate… and so will we. Easter in Lancaster will be Charlie & The Chocolate Factory themed, with characters, chocolate stalls and crafts taking place in and around Market Square on Friday 12th April. There will also be a ‘golden ticket’ campaign in city centre businesses over the two week holiday, where participants will receive golden tickets for shopping locally in Lancaster city centre, which can be put into a prize draw to win £250 to spend in a Lancaster city centre shop of your choice! So if you like chocolate, raffles and family-fun, this is the event for you!
When you think Dino-Day, you think May. This year Dino-Day takes place on Friday 31st May in the city centre. This will be the third time that these fantastic beasts have descended on the city centre, and each year, the number of dinosaurs has grown eno-ROAR-mously. In homage to Sir Richard Owen (the man who coined the word dinosaur) Dino-Day will feature ‘life-like’ dinosaurs, baby dinosaurs, dinosaur crafts, fossils and ranger experience. Dino-Day is set to be THE diary date for those of you with 5 year olds.
Lancaster Pride takes place on Saturday 22nd June, celebrating diversity in Lancaster. The third annual Lancaster Pride event will feature a march around the city centre, followed by a selection of great acts taking to the stage in Dalton Square.
Autumn welcomes the return of Lancaster Festa Italia on Sunday 8th September for a whole host of Italian themed fun, food, drink and entertainment for the whole family. Lancaster city centre will see its streets decorated with Italian stalls, Italian vehicles and the return of the hugely popular umbrella canopy on New Street.
Lancaster Festa Italia is closely followed by the annual Lancaster Jazz Festival, which takes place from 11th – 15th September 2018. This popular annual events features unforgettable performances from intimate jazz vocals in the historic Sun Square to beautiful solo performances in the mighty Ashton Hall. An event that celebrates great artists and great music- and one for your diary.
Lancaster Music Festival makes a very welcome return to the city in October, after a year out in 2018. This hugely popular event will entertain audiences with 450 performances at more than 40 venues throughout Lancaster city centre- with most events being FREE! Lancaster Music Festival takes place from 10th – 14th October. Psst….Don’t miss Massive Wagons playing at Lancaster Castle on Friday 11th and Saturday 12th, but hurry- tickets selling fast.
November will be the month to wrap up warm and enjoy the delights of the two day Light Up Lancaster Festival which takes place on Friday 1st and Saturday 2nd November 2018. This two day festival features beautiful light based art installations around the city centre and culminates in a spectacular fireworks display on Saturday evening. November also sees the return of the Lancaster BID Christmas Lights Switch On… but is it too early to talk about Christmas? We’ll let you decide, but the date for your diary is Sunday 24th November… just in case!
But this article is only a highlights guide to Lancaster. There are so many fantastic events which take place in Lancaster through the year, from comedy at The Borough’s weekly comedy club, to plays at The Dukes and comedians at Lancaster Grand Theatre. Not to mention the events which take place through the year at The Storey, Lancaster Priory, Lancaster Castle and other locations.
