Local Gin Distillery Wins National Award
Craft Distilling Expo’s
Gin of the Year Competition Results
The Craft Distilling Expo (26th-27th September 2019) is pleased to announce the results of the 7th annual Gin of the Year competition.
All of the spirits were tasted blind. The gins were initially tasted on their own, with the top scoring spirits then moving through to a second round where they were tasted with Fever-Tree Tonic Water.
New for 2019, the competition added a panel for (non-gin) botanical spirits, in recognition of this growing section of the market and how its popularity helps to reduce the dilution of gin as a category.
The categories included Classic Gin, Contemporary Gin, Flavoured Gin, Navy Gin, Old Tom Gin, Signature Botanical Gin, and Botanical Spirit.
Andy and Zoe Arnold-Bennett, from Shed 1 Distillery, Ulverston, were awarded Highly Commended for their Cuckold’s Revenge Gin in the Contemporary Gin of the Year and Highly Commended for their Giggle in the Giggle Gin in the Signature Botanical of the Year.
Zoe said, “We’re really chuffed to have been recognised in this way. We only entered two of our gins and both have been rewarded. Cuckold’s Revenge was the first gin we created and as well as this accolade, it has a 2-Star Great Taste Award and features in the latest edition of “101 Gins to Try Before You Die”.
Andy went on to say, “We’re also really pleased that Giggle in the Ginnel was Highly Recommended. It is a true gin, but we know it pushes the boundaries due to the complex flavour profile. It has many fans, including a lot of whiskey drinkers!”
As well as this award, this year Shed 1 Distillery has achieved a further 5 Great Taste Awards and has been chosen to be part of the Small Biz 100, Small Business Saturday initiative. They are also finalists in the North Rural Business Awards, and Zoe is an EVA (Enterprise Vision Awards) finalist.
