Security Arrangements at Heysham Power Stations
Dear Local Community Liaison Committee (LCLC) Member, We are writing to you to inform you of the measures that we are taking on our sites following the tragic events in Manchester. We are sure you will be aware that the National Terrorist Threat level has been raised to Critical, meaning that a further attack may be imminent.
The threat level has been raised due to ongoing concerns regarding the threat to iconic buildings, crowded places, public events and the transport infrastructure. At this time the specific threat level for the civil nuclear sector has not increased.
Our Civil Nuclear Constabulary (CNC) officers are fully integrated into the UK national response arrangements and will provide support to Home Office forces by reallocating some resource from our nuclear sites which will be backfilled and augmented by military personnel, this is in accordance with our existing tried and tested arrangements. The military personnel will operate under the control of the CNC.
Our civil nuclear sites remain fully protected and the CNC will continue to carry out their core role of protecting nuclear sites and materials, while also being part of the strategic reserve supporting communities across the country.
The temporary integration of military personnel onto our sites will be completed calmly and professionally by our highly trained security staff, working closely with CNC, and in accordance with existing procedures and training.
However, in order to avoid distraction to our security staff and facilitate the smooth reception, induction and integration of the military personnel, we have made the decision to suspend plant tours of our sites by the general public, including school parties for an initial period of seven days. The visitor centres, all of which are outside our site boundary fences, will remain open.
We are sure you will appreciate the reasons why we are taking this action, do please contact us if you have any questions or concerns. Kind regards Richard Bradfield John Munro Station Director Station Director Heysham 1 Heysham 2
