Chamber Chat – Heysham power station celebrates significant generation milestone.
This month, Heysham 2 power station is pleased to be celebrating its 300TWh generation milestone, which means that it is on track to become the UK’s most productive nuclear power station.
This is a huge achievement for the station, and one that we are very proud of. To put this into context, 300TWh is equivalent to enough low-carbon electricity to power every home in Lancashire for 147 years. The only UK station to have produced more is Hinkley Point B in Somerset, which ended generation in 2022 on 311TWh.
By achieving this milestone, it’s estimated that the station has saved more than 100 million tonnes of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere, which is like taking every car off the UK’s roads for almost two years.
This achievement really highlights the station’s ongoing and significant role in providing reliable electricity to support the UK’s energy needs.
Through construction and generation, the station has been part of the community for 44 years, providing thousands of jobs and contributing tens of millions of pounds to the local economy each year.
This milestone is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team, some who have been here since we began generating in 1988, and all of them, leading the transition to a cleaner, low-carbon electric future.
We are pleased to be highlighting this milestone as a real team effort and we are holding celebrations on site with all of our staff.
So, what is next for the site? We hope that it will not be too long until we overtake Hinkley Point B as the UK’s most productive power station.
When EDF took over the UK’s fleet of nuclear power stations in 2009, Heysham 2 was due to stop generating in 2023, after 35 years of operation. Its current end of generation date is March 2028, but our ambition is to generate further, subject to plant inspections and regulatory approvals.
